Type 2 Diabetes in the Dominican Republic.
Type 2 diabetes is a common condition all over the world, and the Dominican Republic is no different. Diabetes management requires consistent access to health care, food access, access to reasonable movement and/or physical activity opportunities, and social support among others.
Since 2015, we have conducted a longitudinal qualitative study to explore what the experiences of adults living with type 2 diabetes in rural areas in the Dominican Republic. We have further explored the mental and emotional health components of managing type 2 diabetes for adults, including barriers and buffering techniques.
An ongoing project is to examine the role of diabetes-related stress and diabetes management for adults with type 2 diabetes who reside in rural areas who are seeking care. We completed quantitative data collection in the summer of 2023 to parse out stress, depressive symptomatology, anxiety, diabetes-related behaviors, and key diabetes outcomes.
